YouTube authorized then again banned in Turkey ...

An Ankara court had lifted on 30 October, the proscription imposed on You Tube in Turkey. The popular platform for sharing videos had been banned in September 2007 by a court of Sivas, following a complaint clips deemed insulting to the memory of Mustafa Kemal. However, the latter having been removed from the portal which had published the Turkish courts had therefore lifted a ban, often denounced by the European authorities and even by some official authorities Turkish, starting with the president himself, who wished on several occasions, the end of a situation that brings Turkey countries considered enemies of the Internet.

Indeed, without formally placed Turkey on the list of the 10 Internet enemies countries (Saudi Arabia, Burma, North Korea, Cuba, Egypt, Iran, Uzbekistan, Syria, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Vietnam) "Reporters Without Borders has for the first time in 2010, appearing on the" countries under surveillance "in the company of Australia, Belarus, UAE, South Korea, Russia and Thailand. The RSF report made particular note: "In Turkey, about taboos revolve mainly around Atatürk, the military, the question of minorities (Kurds and Armenians in particular) and the dignity of the nation. As such, several thousands of sites are blocked, including YouTube, sparking protests. Bloggers and netizens who express themselves freely on these subjects are exposed to reprisals, including the courts. "

On 1 November, the OSCE representative for Freedom, Duja Mijatovic, hailed the reopening of You tube in Turkey, while calling lifting the bans that still weigh on other sites. Unfortunately, since November 3, YouTube is banned again. At issue this time broadcast from the famous video showing the former CHP leader Deniz Baykal in a compromising position with one of the deputies of his party, a document whose distribution on the Internet had led to the resignation of the leader Kemalist last May, which is outlawed by the Turkish courts since ... For this one, display the privacy of Deniz Baykal is as serious as violations of the cult of Mustafa Kemal jurisprudence ... to think ...

Joking, maintaining the ban is particularly shocking in a country where there is yet an abundance of media of any kind, relatively free (TV, radio, newspapers, magazines ...) in any case much higher than in Belarus or Egypt (when You Tube is also available). So far this situation seemed to be the result of particularly rigid interpretation made by some judges obtuse laws protecting the national honor or integrity of certain dogmas and taboos. In October 2008 a decision of the First Criminal Division of Diyarbakır, dated October 20 2008, referenced under number 2008/2761, targeting Kurdish sites, had earned a ban on the broadcast platform Blogs Google "Blogspot". Following widespread protests, which were then expressed against the blocking of the largest global platform of blogs, the ban was eventually lasted three days, but we remember it was a private time our Turkish readers their favorite blog (see our October 28, 2008 edition)!

This new episode of the ban on YouTube shows that the issue of full freedom of consultation and free Internet usage in Turkey is still valid. Too bad!
